Jânio Quadros rose to the presidency of Brazil with remarkable speed. In São Paulo, he had previously served as councilor, deputy, mayor of the capital, and state governor. Known for his dramatic, exhibitionist, and often demagogic political style, he captured the support of a large portion of the electorate by pledging to fight corruption. His famous campaign slogan—“sweeping all the filth out of public administration”—was symbolized by a broom.
Before assuming the presidency, Jânio Quadros, a personal friend of Alexandre Adamiu, founder of Pousada do Sandi, sent a letter thanking him for his hospitality and seeking support for his presidential campaign.
